Wildlife Conservation Society Job Vacancy: Fisheries Community Officer, Manado – North Sulawesi
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a New York-based international conservation organization currently working in more than 60 countries worldwide. WCS has a distinguished history of scientists exploring and saving wildlife in some of the most remote and wild places remaining on Earth. The Wildlife Conservation Society Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) was founded in the early 1990s and has contributed substantially to the conservation of biodiversity in Indonesia. WCS-IP currently has programs focusing both on its terrestrial and marine program. In order to achieve our overall goal of saving wildlife and wild places in Indonesia, we aim to protect threatened species and their habitat through working with government agencies, civil society organizations, private sector and local communities. The WCS Indonesia Marine program focuses on the establishment and effective management of MPAs and development of sustainable fisheries, as interlinked strategies to secure and manage Indonesia’s coastal marine resources. WCS commits to assisting the Government of Indonesia to meet its national and international commitments to MPA establishment and management – including the commitment to achieve 20 million hectares of MPAs by 2020. MPAs benefit both biodiversity and fisheries management by protecting habitats and protecting breeding populations of important marine organisms.
WCS has started marine work in Indonesia in 2002 and has expertise in marine and socioeconomic surveying, fisheries science, marine protected area creation and management, marine and fisheries policy, and law enforcement. WCS will continue to support the Government of Indonesia through sustainable fisheries management, decreasing threats to coral reefs and supporting the designation and management of protected areas. WCS also support the engagement of coastal communities in respective sites to actively participating in the fisheries management efforts.
This project aims at conserving Indonesia’s diverse marine ecosystems and important fisheries through creation and improvement of marine protected areas (MPA) and improved management of commercially and ecologically important fisheries. It will benefit the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, fisheries managers in North Sulawesi provinces, and local communities who rely on marine resources. It will address threats of overfishing, destructive fishing, and loss of marine habitats. WCS-IP is currently seeking for qualified candidates to fill the following vacancy:
