Selamatkan Yaki – Job Description, Education Coordinator (EC)
The Selamatkan Yaki conservation programme is developing its field project team to fulfil the aim of reducing the threats to Macaca nigra and its habitat. The Education Coordinator (EC) is a central role to our outreach and education approach, the core responsibilities of whom are leading with the planning, implementation and monitoring of the ongoing Education and Awareness Raising Strategy (EARS) and overall support for the programme development. The role is based in North Sulawesi, Indonesia working directly with the current team and other stakeholders.

- Duration of contract: 12 months from starting date; with potential to extend subject to
business need and funding availability
- Start date: February 2019 (possible training to begin end of January 2019)
- Probation period: 3 months (where appropriate)
- Location: Manado, Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia; travelling within the region will be
- Salary: competitive monthly salary, reduced rate for first 3 months’ probation period
- Benefits: 20 days annual leave, plus Indonesian public holidays; annual 5% salary increase; comprehensive health insurance package, pension and works insurance; personal vehicle maintenance if used predominantly for work
- Hours of work: Variable depending on job requirements, but expected to be around 40hr week over at least 5 days a week
- Reporting to: Programme Director, Programmes Coordinator and Deputy Manager where appropriate
- Working with: Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust staff; researchers and students, as well as collaborators (e.g. Sam Ratulangi University, other NGOs etc.) and stakeholders (e.g. local villagers, government officials etc.).
The Education Coordinator (EC) will work directly with the Programme Director (PD) and education team for the planning, co-development and evaluation of the EARS project into the long term. Their main responsibilities will include strategic education planning, coordination of activities on the ground and evaluation. They will initiate and maintain communication with local schools, institutions, communities, stakeholders and collaborators, especially those related to education and awareness raising activities.
The EC is expected to work independently and communicate strongly with other stakeholders and partners, while providing a motivational and mentoring role for assistants in the team.
Several key education project elements will be planned and initiated including the continuation of education campaigns, bushmeat market engagement and development of a conservation curriculum. These will need to be carefully prepared, implemented and evaluated in order to succeed, while simultaneously driving the progression of the project and the next steps in its development.
- Coordinate the EARS team in planning and implementing scheduled education
- Organise and coordinate the implementation of campaign activities, with the
support of the Education Assistants (EAs);
- Plan and communicate tasks related to education and awareness raising activities
(i.e. through Asana task management software and email);
- Support, motivate and instruct the Education Assistants (EAs);
- Direct and/or assist in the conceptualisation, design and execution of materials and
media for campaign needs, in addition to programme design needs where capacity
- Manage budgets and report finances related to education and campaign activities,
following the Financial Standard Operating Procedures (SOP);
- Source and write grant applications, along with required project updates to funders;
- Assist in initiating and maintaining communications with communities, stakeholders
- Coordinate and/or supervise education volunteers (e.g. field volunteers, graphic
designers, illustrators, translators);
- Source and purchase equipment necessary for daily and project activities;
Attendance at stakeholder meetings, seminars etc.

Required skills and characteristics:
- Enthusiastic, dedicated and a proven track record in conservation education, awareness raising or appropriate related work;
- Minimum 2 years working in conservation or education sectors;
- Able to work independently as well as motivate and lead a team;
- Strong communication skills;
- Able to write, speak and present with a high level of proficiency in English, in addition to Bahasa Indonesia;
- Proven logistical coordination capabilities;
- Strong administrative skills including project planning, report writing, budgeting and
good working knowledge of associated computer programmes (including all relevant Microsoft Office programs);
- Familiar with conservation issues relating to Sulawesi (or Indonesia);
- Relevant education with a conservation, communications or design-based bachelor’s degree;
- Flexible and able to work in a dynamic environment.
Desirable skills and characteristics:
- Fluent in Bahasa Indonesia and English;
- Skilled in graphic design and multimedia conceptualisation as well as execution using relevant design/multimedia software (preferably Adobe suite);
- Understand theoretical background to conservation education approaches, strategic campaign planning and social marketing;
- Proficient in grant writing and fundraising;
- Full, clean driving licence;
- Experience working in Sulawesi, or other area in Indonesia;
- Experience in coordinating and supervising education activities under field
